What is old money style, and how is it different from quiet luxury?

Old money is an internet name for the way long-established wealthy families are imagined to dress: navy blazers, pressed chinos, cable knits, loafers, linen in summer. It borrows from Ivy League wardrobes, English country clothing and the Riviera of the 1950s and 1960s. Nothing in it looks new, loud or bought to be noticed.

Quiet luxury shares the no-logo rule but is a shopping category: expensive brands recognised by people in the know. Old money is closer to a habit. A jacket worn for ten years and re-hemmed fits the style better than a new one at five times the price, which is why the look works on a modest budget and fails when everything arrives in one delivery.

What are the rules: cloth, cut, palette, no logos?

Five rules carry the look; our journal explains their origins. This is the shopping version.

• Cloth: cotton, linen, wool, cashmere or blends that age well. Read the composition before the price; a shiny synthetic spoils a good cut.
• Cut: jackets fit at the shoulder, trousers sit at the waist and fall straight. Nothing skin-tight, nothing deliberately oversized.
• Palette: navy, cream, white, camel, grey, olive and chocolate brown, plus one deeper colour at most, such as burgundy. Black is for evenings.
• No logos: no embroidered emblems, monogram prints or branded hardware on bags and belts.
• Care: the same pieces worn often, pressed, brushed, de-pilled and resoled.

What does a men's old money wardrobe need, piece by piece?

Start with what you would wear most days; add the rest only when an outfit keeps failing without it. For a working week and weekends in a mild climate:

• A navy jacket, softly structured, that works with chinos and with grey trousers.
• A white or pale blue oxford shirt, and a linen shirt.
• A knit polo in navy, cream or brown, in place of a T-shirt.
• Stone chinos, and sand or grey pleated trousers.
• A fine crew-neck or roll-neck knit in navy or cream.

What does a women's old money wardrobe need, piece by piece?

Women's old money is usually shown through heirloom jewellery and silk scarves, which is where budgets run away. The working core is plainer and close to the men's list:

• A tailored jacket in navy, camel or cream that closes over a knit.
• An ivory shirt and a linen shirt.
• A fine crew-neck knit, and a cardigan that works buttoned as a top.
• Wide-leg or pleated trousers, dark straight jeans and a midi skirt.
• A trench coat for the in-between season.
• Loafers, ballet flats or a low block heel; an unbranded structured bag; small gold jewellery.

How do you dress children in old money style without it looking like a costume?

Children borrow the palette and the collar, not the tailoring. A seven-year-old in a stiff blazer and tie on a Saturday looks costumed; in a navy cardigan, a white polo and stone trousers the same child looks well dressed. Movement, washing and growth decide the rest.

• Buy: knit cardigans and jumpers, polos, soft chinos with an elastic back, a cotton jacket, plain trainers.
• Skip for every day: miniature blazers, shirts that need ironing, white trousers for toddlers.

How do you wear old money in the heat of Dubai, the Gulf or a hot summer?

Old money imagery assumes New England weather: tweed, flannel, heavy knits. World Meteorological Organization climate data for Dubai (1974–1991) give a mean daily maximum of 40.6 °C in July and 38.7 °C in September; even January averages 24.0 °C by day and 13.7 °C at night. Swap accordingly:

• Tweed jacket → an unlined linen or linen-blend jacket in cream or sand.
• Oxford shirt under a jacket → a linen shirt, open at the neck.
• Roll-neck → a cotton knit polo; the roll-neck waits for air-conditioned evenings.
• Wool trousers → cotton or linen, a little looser in the leg.
• Dark palette → cream, white, stone and pale blue by day; navy after sunset.

For children, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise loose, lightweight, light-coloured clothing on hot days; loose linen and cotton do that and still look deliberate. Indoors, air conditioning runs cold, so carry a light knit.

What does an old money wardrobe cost at three budgets?

The fix is subtraction: remove one prop and one logo, then give the rest a year of wear.
