Personal color analysis: how it works, what it costs and what it cannot tell you

Personal color analysis matches your skin, eye and hair coloring to a palette, usually by draping fabric near your face in daylight. Published prices run from £90 for a short online session to $497 in person, and research supports the idea only in part. VITON13’s colour and silhouette direction starts from $93.

What is personal color analysis, and which system will you meet?

Personal color analysis sorts skin, eye and hair coloring into groups and matches each group to a palette of clothing and make-up colors. Wikipedia traces it to 19th-century color theory and to 1970s and 1980s books, among them Carole Jackson’s Color Me Beautiful (1980), that sorted people into four seasons. The grouping is a style convention, not a laboratory measurement.

Color-analysis systems you may be offered
SystemGroupsHow the sources describe it
Four seasons4Spring, summer, autumn, winter, told apart mainly by temperature and contrast
Twelve sub-seasons12Each season split again, such as Light Spring or Soft Autumn; Jo Boyd Styling uses 12 seasons plus a “tonal” technique
Sixteen16MySeasonColors’ quiz returns one of 16 results
Twenty-three23ATX Color Studio in Austin tests until it finds the specific palette inside 23 seasons
Dominant colouring3 levelsColour Me Beautiful UK names a dominant, secondary and tertiary colouring and builds a 42-swatch palette
Names and counts as each firm publishes them; Wikipedia notes that schools differ greatly.

More groups mean finer palettes, not stronger proof: no source we found tests whether 23 seasons beat four. Ask an analyst which system they use and how they treat someone between two groups.

How does a color analysis session work?

  1. Talk firstYou say what you wear and want. Colour Me Beautiful’s online version asks for a make-up-free photo and some of your own garments beforehand.
  2. Bare face, good lightThe analyst looks at skin, eyes and hair in natural or daylight-balanced light, with make-up removed and hair dye taken into account.
  3. DrapingFabrics are held under your chin, often a warm and a cool version of one color. ATX Color Studio says it watches brightness, evenness, shadows, redness and facial definition.
  4. Naming the resultThe analyst settles on undertone, depth, chroma and contrast between hair, skin and eyes, then on a season or sub-season.
  5. Take-awayA palette (Colour Me Beautiful lists 30 or 42 colors; Jo Boyd a six-page report), make-up shades and shopping advice. Sessions run 45 to 90 minutes.

How much does a color analysis cost?

There is no standard price because there is no standard training: Wikipedia notes that no degree is required to market oneself as a color analyst. Price follows session length, system, what you take home and the city.

Should you choose in person, online or an AI selfie tool?

How good are selfie tools? One 2026 paper gives a rare number. The Lumina system, trained on the Deep Armocromia dataset of labeled faces, picked the dataset’s season label on about 55% of test photos, with spring the weakest. Its authors found eye and hair more informative than skin tone, but treat that as dataset-specific. It is a benchmark, not a verdict on any app.

Before uploading a face photo, read what the service keeps, for how long, whether it trains models on it and how to delete it.

What does the research say, and what can color analysis not tell you?

In 1990, Radeloff showed 276 people photographs of models: participants agreed with experts’ recommended and non-recommended colors in five of six photo sets. It did not test seasons, undertones or whether two analysts agree.

In 2021, David Perrett’s group at St Andrews wrote that stylists’ categories are not defined scientifically and their advice is inconsistent. In tests with 96 and 75 observers and 12 women’s faces, cool blue hues were matched to fair skin and warm orange-red to tanned skin. In 2023 he reported that iris color dominated and skin color had little influence, even when volunteers were told to match skin.

Read together: some support that matching clothing color to coloring changes how a look is judged, and none that we found for twelve-, sixteen- or twenty-three-season systems, for analysts agreeing or for a palette lasting for life. Both studies used White women’s faces, so they say nothing yet about men or other ethnic backgrounds.

  • It can give you a consistent shortlist to test, starting neutrals and metals, and a filter against impulse buying.
  • It cannot prove a color is wrong on you, replace fit and occasion, or state a biological “true season”.

How can you check your colors yourself, carefully?

A home check gives no certified season. It shows whether warm or cool, light or deep, soft or bright deserves testing, enough for a first buying decision.

  1. Pick one window with bright, indirect light and a plain wall behind you.
  2. Remove make-up, tie your hair back, cover dyed hair with a grey cloth and wear a plain neutral top.
  3. Prepare pairs of one color in warm and cool versions: orange-red against blue-red, olive against emerald, golden beige against pink beige.
  4. Hold each under your chin and photograph both with the same phone, distance and settings, no filter. Compare the small photos side by side.
  5. Pick the pair where skin looks more even and the face reads before the garment. Repeat on another day with two people who do not know your expectation.
  6. Note your eye color too, since Perrett’s 2023 study found it steered choices more than skin. Record tendencies, not a season name; “undecided” is a valid result.

How do you turn a palette into a wardrobe?

A palette of 30 to 42 colors is far more than a wardrobe needs; turn it into rules to shop by.

  1. Fix neutrals first: try navy, black, charcoal, brown and cream near your face, then build coats, shoes and trousers around the winners.
  2. Audit what you own in daylight and sort tops into wear near the face, wear lower and retire.
  3. Plan a first capsule of two or three base neutrals and four to six accents (a working rule, not a sourced figure).
  4. Check fabric and finish: one color looks different in knit, silk and denim.
  5. Shop with a swatch card or saved phone palette, and add shape last: color does not fix a bad cut. The capsule guide below covers item counts.

Which mistakes spoil a color analysis?

  • Overfitting to one season: treating a label as an identity and buying only “your” colors. ATX Color Studio itself says analysis should never feel restrictive.
  • Ignoring change: dye, grey hair, a deep tan or a new haircut shift the picture, so re-test after big changes.
  • Testing in bad light: a yellow bulb, a filter or heavy foundation can move a result by a whole group.
  • Paying for precision you cannot use: a 23-season palette is wasted on a wardrobe of eight garments.

When should you skip color analysis, and what could you buy instead?

  • Skip it if you already wear colors you like and your problem is fit, tailoring or too many clothes.
  • Skip it if you want a scientific verdict; none exists.
  • If two analyses disagree, ask for a comparison of the palettes before paying for a third.
  • Choose an in-person session for make-up and metal advice or physical swatches.
  • Choose a written colour range tied to silhouette and a buying list if your question is what to buy this month.

How VITON13 builds a colour and silhouette direction

We start from your evidence rather than a season name: the calendar you dress for, the clothes you own, fit notes, climate, how much care you will accept and a purchase ceiling. Four steps follow: context audit, silhouette direction, look building and shopping priorities. AI-assisted: AI drafts the first colour range and combinations from what you send, and a stylist reviews each one. Human-led: a stylist leads and AI assists. The result is a direction, not a diagnosis.

No published colour-analysis case yet

VITON13 has not yet published a client colour-and-silhouette case, so this guide shows no invented palettes, photos or savings. Our only styling case is the Old Money clothing label, our own product, which says nothing about colour analysis. Early directions run through the pilot programme, shown only with the client’s consent.

What this does not prove

  • Without a case, nothing here shows what a VITON13 colour direction changes in a wardrobe; the prices come from the firms in the sources.

Questions and answers

How is VITON13’s colour and silhouette direction different from a draping session?

A draping session compares fabrics against your face and ends in a season. VITON13’s direction is a written output built from your calendar, wardrobe, climate and budget: a colour range, silhouette principles and a buying card. It starts from $93; clothes are extra.

Can men get a color analysis too?

Yes, the method is the same, and Wikipedia lists Carole Jackson’s book Color for Men (1984). The research is thinner: the Perrett studies used women’s faces and say nothing about men, so treat a result as a styling aid.

How long does a palette stay valid?

Authors cited by Wikipedia say a season is stable for life and unaffected by tanning. Colour Me Beautiful sells a Colour Review for people whose colors look off years later and says big hair-color changes can alter your dominant colouring. No study we found settles it.

Can color analysis choose make-up, hair color or metals?

Many in-person sessions include make-up shades, and ATX Color Studio lists metals and hair-color guidance among things to check, since some firms charge separately. VITON13’s direction covers clothing colors and silhouette, not make-up or hair.

What if two analysts or tools give me different seasons?

That is common, since methods, group counts and lighting differ. Lay the palettes side by side: if both are warm or both cool, neutrals and metals agree. Ask each analyst for the evidence behind the result, not only the name.
