AI product photos: cost vs a photographer, marketplace rules and where they fail

AI product photo plans work out to roughly 1 to 30 cents per generated image, against $40–$120 for a hero frame on white on one photographer’s 2026 price list, but a person must still check every result against the real item. Marketplaces tie AI images to accuracy instead of banning them. VITON13 photographs products from $53.

How much do AI product photos cost per image?

Vendors publish a monthly fee or a credit pool, not a price per usable image. The table converts each plan into a price per image at full use of its allowance (our arithmetic), with the two marketplace generators we could read.

AI product photo prices as published (USD unless stated, read on 2026-10-02)
ToolPublished price and allowancePer image at full use
PebblelyLite $9, Basic $19 and Pro $39 a month for 30, 200 and 500 images$0.30, $0.095 and $0.078
PhotoroomPro $12.99 a month or $89.99 billed yearly: 8,000 AI credits, 1,000 exports, up to 4,000 basic AI-background generationsAbout $0.013 per export at the 1,000 cap
Wildberries PhotostudioAllowance of 50 or 100 generations inside the Jam subscription, then 50 rubles for each extra one50 rubles beyond the allowance
Ozon AI editorNo separate fee, according to SelSup; its tariff page caps use at 40 images a day per functionNo extra charge
Before tax. Photoroom applies credits and an export cap together, so the ceiling is whichever you hit first.

Per-image prices leave out a clean original of every product, the generations you reject and the time to check each result. Those hours decide whether AI is cheaper.

Where do AI product photos work, and where do they fail?

Image models make convincing pictures, not exact copies. Our rule: let AI change what surrounds a real product, never redraw the product.

  • Works: a clean or neutral background behind a cut-out product; Ozon’s editor generates and removes backgrounds.
  • Works: lifestyle scenes in secondary slots, which Amazon says may show use or context.
  • Works: several backgrounds or crops from one master photo, for testing.
  • Fails: the product itself. In Photoroom’s benchmark of 850 clothing, footwear, bag, jewellery and accessory products, the best of four models kept every detail in 29.0% of virtual-model images and the weakest in 16.8%. The test is strict (one reviewer’s flag fails an image) and covers garments on generated models, the hard case, not a plain background swap.
  • Fails: logos and text, the most frequent error at 20.1% of generations. Wildberries names distorted text as a reason for a lower rating, and SelSup reports that Ozon’s editor distorts jewellery and packaging text.
  • Fails: invented or missing details, altered patterns and colour shifts, all logged in that benchmark.
  • Fails: glass, chrome and other reflective or see-through items, where a model must guess what lies behind them. No source we read measures this.
  • Fails: scale and contact. A scene can show an item too large, too small or floating; compare it with the spec sheet.

Do Amazon, Wildberries, Ozon and Google allow AI-generated product photos?

None of the pages we could read bans AI images. Each ties them to one test: does the picture show the product the buyer will receive?

What each platform’s own page says about product images made or edited with AI
PlatformWhat the page saysRead
AmazonMain image on pure white (RGB 255), product filling 85–100% of the frame; images must accurately represent the product; extra images may show use and context. Photorealistic AI-generated people need the IPTC keyword contains-synthetic-performer in every Amazon store; real people edited with AI do not.Amazon’s own seller-forum posts, 3 Feb and 27 Jul 2026
Google Merchant CenterMain image shows the exact item, with no added promotional text, logos or overlays. Images made with generative AI must carry metadata saying so, for example IPTC TrainedAlgorithmicMedia, and it must not be stripped.Merchant Center Help, undated
WildberriesNeutral background, product uncropped, no logos, tags or promotions on the photo. A badly generated photo, unnatural or with distorted text, can lower the card’s rating. Every photo is moderated; a flagged card has 72 hours to be fixed.Seller help, updated 28 Aug 2026
OzonAn in-account AI editor: extend edges to 3:4, generate a background in some categories, remove a background, improve quality. It cannot separate clothing from a model and distorts jewellery and packaging text, per SelSup.SelSup, 22 Sep 2026

Rules differ by country and category and change often; read your own seller account first.

Can misleading AI product images get a seller into trouble?

Yes, if the picture changes what a buyer expects to receive. The US Federal Trade Commission reads an advertisement in context, words, phrases and pictures together, and treats a claim as material when it matters to the decision to buy, such as features. An AI image that adds a feature, colour or accessory the product lacks is that kind of claim, and an agency can be held responsible alongside the advertiser.

Amazon’s July 2026 notice ties its tagging rule to recent legislation on AI-generated people in advertisements. This covers the United States only and is not legal advice; ask a local lawyer.

How do you use AI photos without misrepresenting the product?

The safe pattern keeps the product real and lets AI work around it.

  1. Photograph the real product firstShoot each item whole and in focus on a neutral background, above the platform’s minimum size. That photo is the source of truth for colour, shape, labels and number of parts.
  2. Keep the real pixelsCut the product out and let AI build only the background, shadow and surface; never ask a model to redraw the product, label or logo.
  3. Keep the main image plainAmazon wants pure white and Google the exact item without overlays: use a photographed frame there and give AI scenes the secondary slots.
  4. Check each result against the itemOpen it beside the original at 100% zoom, product in hand. Check text, logo, colour, count of parts, proportions and contact with the surface.
  5. Keep the metadata and the originalDo not strip the IPTC AI tag Google reads, add Amazon’s keyword if a photorealistic AI person appears, and keep the untouched photo with each approved result.
  6. Approve per SKU, test firstRecord which frames are AI-made and who approved them; test three to five SKUs before the catalogue.

What would ten SKUs cost with AI, a photographer or both?

Assume ten products with seven frames each: a hero and five secondary frames on white plus one lifestyle frame, 70 in all, no models, basic retouching. Totals are our arithmetic on published prices, not quotes.

The hybrid drops the lifestyle line, $2,000–$5,000 on that list, and swaps it for a person’s hours: roughly $240–$525 per SKU against $440–$1,020 for the photographer alone. If checking costs more time than it saves, the plan fee was never the real price.

This package returns a shot map, lighting direction, hero, detail, scale and use frames, a retouched master set and crop exports, in 3–5 working days.

When should you not use AI product photos?

  • The product’s look is the claim: jewellery, glass, a cosmetic shade, a fabric sold on weave and drape.
  • The label carries information buyers rely on, such as ingredients or certificates; a model can change characters.
  • It is the main image on Amazon or the exact-item image on Google.
  • You would put garments on generated models, the hardest case in Photoroom’s benchmark.
  • You cannot compare every frame with the physical item before publishing.
  • The product does not exist yet, or you need exact colour and material variants: a 3D render is built from agreed materials and views, and VITON13 prices it separately.

How VITON13 does it

This service photographs the product as evidence of material, scale, detail, use and what is in the box. The buyer’s questions become a shot map, lighting and surface direction, hero, detail, scale and use frames, a retouched master set and platform exports. In the AI-assisted mode AI helps with planning and finishing while a person compares every frame with the product; in the human-led mode a person drives and AI helps. The written scope is confirmed before payment.

No published case of AI-assisted product photos yet

VITON13 has not yet published a case that pairs a seller’s own photographs with generated scenes and sales figures, so this guide shows no results. Prices come from the pages cited and budgets are arithmetic on them.

What this does not prove

  • The ten-SKU totals are arithmetic on published prices. They do not show what your catalogue would cost or what the pictures do to sales.

Questions and answers

Does Amazon allow AI-generated product images?

Amazon asks that every image accurately represent the product and that the main image be a pure white photo of it, so a generated product is a risk. We read no ban on scenes in extra slots. Since 27 July 2026, photorealistic AI-generated people need an IPTC keyword in every Amazon store.

Do I have to label AI product images?

It depends on the channel. Amazon requires a keyword only for photorealistic AI-generated people. Google Merchant Center requires images made with generative AI to keep an AI-source tag. Wildberries’ photo rules list no labelling rule, and Ozon’s pages were closed to us. This is not legal advice.

Are the marketplaces’ own generators cheaper than tool vendors?

They cost little or nothing extra but work inside one marketplace, one card at a time. Ozon’s editor does backgrounds and edges at no separate fee; Wildberries’ Photostudio does clothing and needs the Jam subscription. A vendor plan works anywhere with the same accuracy risks.

Can AI make the main image for a marketplace card?

Only if the product pixels stay real. Amazon’s main image is a pure white photo filling 85–100% of the frame, and Google wants the exact item without added text or logos. A cut-out of your own photo on white fits both; a fully generated product does not.

How do I check an AI-edited photo against the real product?

Open the result beside the original at 100% zoom and hold the item next to the screen. Check label text, logos, colour, count of parts, proportions and where the product touches the surface. Logo and text errors were the most frequent failure in Photoroom’s benchmark.

What does VITON13 need from me to start?

Send the platform, category, catalogue size, your current photos and the decision you need to make. The written scope then names products, frames, revision rules and exclusions, and we confirm it before payment.
