How much does email marketing cost, and does it pay off?
Email marketing costs two things: a sending service, free for a few hundred contacts and then priced by list size, and the work of writing and setting up useful emails. Litmus puts the average return at $36 for every dollar spent. A VITON13 email lifecycle setup with welcome, follow-up and win-back sequences starts from $53.
What does email marketing cost a small business?
The bill has a small fixed part and a larger part that is work. The sending service charges by the number of contacts or emails, and many start free. The work is deciding which emails to send, writing them, connecting the service to your site or shop and checking that every trigger fires when it should.
| Item | What it covers | What drives the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Sending service | Lists, templates, automation and delivery | Number of contacts or emails; Mailchimp’s free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 sends a month |
| Setup | Sign-up forms, connection to the site or shop, triggers | How many systems must talk to each other |
| Automated sequences | Welcome, follow-up, post-purchase and win-back emails | How many sequences and emails in each |
| Regular newsletters | News, offers and useful content | How often you send and who writes them |
| Measurement | Tracking clicks and orders back to emails | Whether analytics is already in place |
Does email marketing pay off?
Litmus, which surveys email marketers every year, reports an average return of $36 for every dollar spent on email, higher than any other channel it compares. That average hides a wide spread: programmes that segment their list, test their emails and track results do far better than those that send the same newsletter to everyone.
For a small business the most useful part of that finding is where the money comes from. Emails triggered by something a person did, such as signing up, leaving a cart or not buying for months, arrive when the reader already cares. A handful of them, written once, keep working every day without anyone pressing send.
Which emails should you automate first?
| Sequence | Trigger | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome | A new subscriber or customer | Says who you are, what to expect and gives one reason to act now |
| Enquiry or cart follow-up | A form or cart left unfinished | Answers the likely question and brings the person back |
| After purchase | A completed order | Helps the customer use what they bought and asks for a review |
| Win-back | No purchase or click for a set period | Offers a reason to return, then cleans the list if nobody answers |
Each sequence needs two or three emails, not ten. Write them for one reader, keep one call to action per email, and set rules that stop the sequence as soon as the person buys or replies, so nobody gets a discount reminder after paying full price.
How do you grow a list without buying one?
- Offer something specific for the address: a checklist, a price guide, early access or a first-order benefit.
- Ask at the moments people already trust you: after an order, after a consultation, at the end of a useful article.
- Keep the form short: an email address, and a name only if you will use it.
- Record where and when each person agreed, and put an unsubscribe link in every email.
- Never buy or rent lists; they hurt delivery for all your emails and usually break consent law.
Consent rules differ by country, so check yours before the first send. Litmus found that single opt-in programmes, where no confirmation email is needed, return more than double opt-in ones, yet some markets expect confirmed consent. The law of your market comes before the extra return.

Which numbers show that email is working?
| Metric | What it tells you | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery rate | How many emails reached an inbox provider | A drop points to list or domain problems |
| Open rate | Roughly how many opened | Inflated by privacy features that load emails automatically |
| Click rate | How many acted on the email | The most reliable engagement number |
| Unsubscribes and complaints | Whether the emails are wanted | A rise after a send means the wrong message or audience |
| Orders or enquiries from email | What email earns | Needs tagged links and analytics |
Since mail apps began loading images on the reader’s behalf, open rates say little about real attention. Track clicks, replies and the orders that follow them, and read unsubscribes as honest feedback rather than a failure.
Should you set it up yourself or get help?
A small list and one welcome email are easy to set up alone with any modern service. Help pays off when several systems must connect, such as a shop, a CRM and a booking tool, when you need sequences that stop and branch on behaviour, or when nobody on the team has time to write the emails well. A good setup leaves you with the map, the texts and the rules, so you can run it yourself afterwards.
When is email marketing not worth it yet?
If you sell something people buy once in years and you have no list, email will earn little at first; put the effort into getting enquiries. The same applies if you cannot answer the replies email brings. Start collecting addresses anyway, with consent, so the channel is ready when you are.

No published email marketing case yet
VITON13 has not yet published an email marketing case with a client’s figures, so this guide shows no invented open rates or revenue. The first clients join through the pilot programme, and their before-and-after numbers will be published with their consent.

Questions and answers
How much does email marketing cost per month?
The sending service can start at zero: Mailchimp’s free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, and paid plans grow with the list. The larger cost is the work of writing and maintaining emails, which you either do yourself or pay for once as a setup.
Is email marketing still effective?
Yes, when the emails are wanted. Litmus reports an average return of $36 for every dollar spent, the highest of the channels it compares. The return comes mostly from automated emails sent at the right moment, not from frequent mass newsletters.
How many emails should a welcome sequence have?
Usually two or three. The first arrives immediately and delivers what was promised, the next ones introduce your offer and answer common doubts. Stop the sequence as soon as the person buys or replies.
Can I email customers who bought from me before?
It depends on your country and on what they agreed to when buying. Some laws allow emails about similar products to existing customers with an easy opt-out, others require explicit consent for any marketing. Check the rules for your market before the first send.
How long does the VITON13 setup take?
It takes 3–5 working days after we get access to your sending service and the site or shop. You receive the lifecycle map, the sequence copy and working triggers, tested on every path before they go live.
Which email service should I use?
Choose by what you need to connect: your shop or site, your CRM and your language. Most modern services handle automation, forms and analytics; price and integrations decide the rest. We set up the service you already use or help you pick one before we start.
