How much does market research cost for a small business or startup?
A small business can run market research for nothing but time, hire a freelancer at about $61 an hour, or pay an agency $5,000–$15,000 for a 400-response online survey, according to published price lists. A desk study of buyers, alternatives and demand starts from $73, so match the method to the decision.
How much does market research cost?
There is no single price: “market research” covers a free afternoon in public data and a six-figure tracking study. You mostly pay for people’s time and for finding respondents. Each row below is one firm’s own quote, not a rule.
| Route | Published price | What you get, and the catch |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | $0 in cash, plus your hours | Free public data and conversations; the US Small Business Administration warns that asking customers directly is time-consuming and expensive |
| Freelance researcher | About $61 an hour, or £372 a day, on average | Contractor booking data; rates swing with seniority and place |
| US agency, online survey | $5,000–$15,000+ for 400 responses | Agency-run, with design, fieldwork and reporting |
| US agency, interviews | $5,000–$15,000 for 10–15 in-depth interviews | Recruiting, moderating, analysis; remote costs less |
| US agency, focus group | $7,000–$20,000+ per group | Facility, recruiting, $75–$150 incentives per head; online groups cost less |
| Belgian agency, desk research | €4,000–€6,000 | About a week of an analyst’s time on public sources |
| Research firm, small professional-services client | About $20,000 per round | Hinge’s estimate for a firm with $5 million revenue |
| AI desk-research report (Preuve AI) | $59 per report | The vendor’s own list price; scans public sources, no interviews, so check each figure’s source |
| VITON13 desk study | From $73 | Up to 5 questions, 10 alternatives, 3 demand sources, a decision memo; no paid respondents |
The gap is scope, not only quality. A $5,000 survey counts what people say they will do; a $5,000 desk study shows what they already buy and where they complain. Compare what each quote contains before you compare totals.
What does one completed survey response cost?
A “complete” is a respondent who qualified, finished and passed quality checks. Narrow audiences, long questionnaires and bigger incentives raise the price, which is why business respondents cost far more than the general public.
| Route | Cost per completed unit | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Self-serve panel (Prolific) | About $2.86 for a 10-minute survey at $12 an hour | Participant pay plus a fee of usually 42.8% for companies; floor $8 an hour; you write the survey and read the data |
| Agency-run online survey | About $12–$38 per complete at 400 responses | Our arithmetic from Drive Research’s range; includes design, fieldwork, reporting |
| Telephone survey | €20–€100 per successful call | IntoTheMinds; projects start at €5,000 |
| One-to-one interview at an agency | €600 consumer, €750 business | About 8 hours of work per interview, recruiting to analysis (IntoTheMinds) |
| Interview participant incentive | About $100 for a remote business session; $70 under 30 minutes | Average incentives (User Interviews), before recruiting fees |
The $2.86 buys respondents; the $12–$38 buys a finished study. If you can write a neutral questionnaire and read raw data, a panel is cheap. If not, the difference pays for avoiding a confident wrong answer.
How many respondents are enough?
A survey measures how many; interviews explain why. Drive Research gives these rules of thumb for a survey’s margin of error.
| Completed surveys | Margin of error | Good enough for |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | Too wide to trust | Nothing you would put in a budget |
| 100 | About ±10% | A direction check on one audience |
| 200 | About ±7–8% | A first look at two groups side by side |
| 400 | About ±4–5% | Demand or price numbers you plan around |
| 1,000 | About ±2–3% | Comparing several segments |
For interviews, count themes, not people. Hennink, Kaiser and Marconi found the range of themes by nine interviews and a fuller understanding at 16 to 24, in a fairly uniform group; a mixed audience needs more. Ten to fifteen interviews per customer type is a sensible first budget.
IntoTheMinds calls focus groups of six to ten people oversold as a stand-alone method: they confirm or refute what other methods found.
What does a bounded study deliver?
A bounded study answers a short list of questions that a yes or a no would change. The US Small Business Administration frames the basics as demand, market size, location, saturation and pricing. Our package turns that into up to 5 questions, up to 10 alternatives compared, 3 demand sources and a decision memo.
- Buyers: who pays today, how they describe the problem and what they compare.
- Alternatives: what people use instead, including doing nothing, with price and weak points.
- Demand signals: search interest, listings and reviews, each with its source and date.
- Evidence gaps: what is still a guess and what would close it, such as ten interviews.
- Competitor set: the rivals buyers actually compare, not the ones you admire.
It will not tell you what your customers would pay or why they prefer one brand; that needs interviews or a survey.
What does a competitor analysis cost, and what does it add?
A competitor analysis narrows the study to the rivals your buyers compare. The US Small Business Administration lists what to assess: market share, strengths and weaknesses, barriers to entry and indirect competitors. Price depends on the method.
| Method | Price (IntoTheMinds, 2025) | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Desk research on public information | About €5,000 for one country or sector | Who competes, at what price and with what promise |
| Online survey of competitors’ customers | About €8,500 | Why people choose a rival |
| Telephone survey of competitors’ customers | About €10,000 | The same question, for hard-to-reach buyers |
| Mystery shopping | About €5,000 consumer, €10,000 business | How rivals sell and serve in practice |
| VITON13 competitor research | From $53 | A competitor landscape, demand evidence and opportunity directions |
A free template tells you what to write in each box; the work is deciding which rivals count and checking each claim against a dated source. Buy competitor research alone when the question is who else is out there; buy market research when you also doubt demand.
How do you brief a market research study?
A tight brief is the cheapest way to lower a quote, because vague questions are what push scope up.
- State the decision: a launch, a price, a niche or a channel, and what you will do on a yes and on a no.
- Write up to five questions that the answer would change, such as whether people already pay for this.
- Describe the audience in a sentence a recruiter could screen on; a narrow group costs more.
- List what you hold: sales data, customer emails, a competitor list.
- Set a ceiling, a date and a format: a one-page memo for you, or a full report for a lender.
- Ask each bidder who recruits respondents, how long the survey runs, which quality checks apply and whether you receive raw data.
A quote that skips questionnaire design or analysis is not cheaper, it is smaller.
When should you not commission market research?
- The decision is made. Research ordered to confirm a plan is expensive reassurance.
- Nobody can act on the answer. If no result would change your price, offer or launch date, skip it.
- A free source answers it. The US Small Business Administration lists federal statistics on demographics, income and spending.
- Testing is cheaper than asking. A landing page, a pre-order or ten sales calls can cost less than a survey.
- The sample cannot be reached or is too small. Twenty-five completes do not support a percentage, and a rare audience can cost more than the project.
- You expect the research to market the product. A survey is not lead generation.
If your answer is “maybe”, start with free data and five conversations with buyers, then pay only for the part that stays uncertain.

How VITON13 runs a market research study
We start from the decision, not the report: you name the launch, price or niche in doubt, and we turn it into up to five questions that a yes or a no would change. We collect alternatives and demand signals from public sources, note the source and date of every figure, compare what buyers choose and where they complain, and write a memo that separates what is known from what is guessed. AI-assisted: AI does the first pass over sources and listings, and an analyst checks each figure. Human-led: an analyst leads and AI assists. A short survey to your own customer list can be added.

No published market research case yet
There is no VITON13 market research study yet that you can read with a client’s name on it. The price ranges above come from the firms cited, and the order of work comes from how the methods differ; nothing here is a result we achieved. The first studies run through the pilot programme.
What this does not prove
- Without a published case, nothing here shows what a VITON13 study finds or how often it changes a decision; the figures are other firms’ quotes.
Questions and answers
Can you do market research for free?
Yes, for the first pass. The US Small Business Administration lists free federal statistics, and you can talk to ten buyers at no cost. The price is hours: a small survey, interviews and the write-up take days, and friends tend to flatter an idea. Pay only for the part that stays uncertain.
How much does a focus group cost?
Drive Research puts a US focus group at $7,000–$20,000+ per group; IntoTheMinds in Belgium lists €3,000–€5,000. Because IntoTheMinds calls focus groups oversold on their own, use one to test findings you already have, not as your only evidence.
How much does an in-depth interview cost?
At an agency, about €600 for a consumer interview and €750 for a business one, according to IntoTheMinds, which counts around eight hours of work each. Interviewing buyers yourself costs incentives instead, about $100 per remote business session in User Interviews’ report, plus your time.
Are AI research tools a substitute for market research?
They speed up the desk part: collecting listings, reviews and public figures. They cannot interview your buyers or show what people would pay, and they can repeat an outdated number. Whatever the tool, ask for the source and date behind each figure.
How long does market research take?
Desk research is quick: IntoTheMinds budgets about a week of an analyst, and VITON13 delivers in 5–8 working days once the brief is approved. Studies with fieldwork run longer; Hinge puts the average project at two to eight weeks.
Is competitor analysis the same as market research?
No. Competitor analysis is one part: who else sells to your buyers, at what price and with what promise. Market research also asks whether demand exists and what people use instead. If only rivals matter, a smaller competitor study fits; if you doubt demand, start with market research.
