SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what a small business actually needs

SEO earns the click, AEO the quoted answer, GEO a mention in an AI reply. For most small businesses the last two are not separate projects: Google’s July 2026 guide says its AI features rest on the index and core ranking. Fix indexing, service pages and your business profile first, then check free AI reports before paying for GEO.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

The labels describe where a customer sees you, not three different websites. SEO works on the classic results page: a ranking, a snippet, a click. AEO aims to make your page the quoted direct answer — a featured snippet, a voice reply, the lead source under an AI Overview. GEO aims to get your business named or linked in a reply a model writes: ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Mode or Yandex’s Alice AI.

The term GEO comes from a 2023 research paper (KDD 2024) that reported visibility gains of up to 40% in its own benchmark: a lab result, not a forecast for your website.

Does a small business need separate AEO or GEO work at all?

Mostly not. Google’s guide to its generative AI features, updated 10 July 2026, says they rest on the core Search ranking and quality systems: the model retrieves pages from the index and runs its own related “fan-out” searches. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet before it can appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. In Google, AEO and GEO sit on top of SEO, not beside it.

The same guide lists what you can ignore: llms.txt and other AI-only files, chunking content, rewriting copy for machines, chasing inauthentic mentions and special schema. Structured data still makes pages eligible for rich results; it is not a key to AI answers. Other engines add checks, not a new discipline:

  • ChatGPT: sites that block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt are not shown in ChatGPT search answers; blocking GPTBot only opts you out of model training.
  • Bing: citations in Copilot are reported in Bing Webmaster Tools, and Bing asks local businesses to keep Bing Places current.
  • Google: Search Console’s Search generative AI setting includes your site by default; excluding it removes you from AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The genuinely separate part is measurement: whether you are cited, and who is cited instead of you. For a small firm that is an hour a month, not a retainer.

What comes first for a local service, an online store, a B2B firm or a multilingual site?

The order depends on where AI answers take their facts about you.

First moves by type of business
Business typeWhere answers get your factsFirst three actionsFirst paid step, if any
Local service: salon, clinic, repairs, toursGoogle Business Profile, Bing Places, service pages1) Complete the free Business Profile: categories, hours, services, photos. 2) One page per service with area, price range and next steps. 3) Make profile and site match.Search Snapshot, if you cannot tell who takes the map and the answers
Online storeMerchant Center feeds, product pages1) Submit a Merchant Center feed. 2) Replace supplier text with your own product copy. 3) Keep filter and sort URLs out of the index.Technical SEO audit, when much of the catalogue is not indexed
B2B serviceCase pages, third-party profiles, articles that mention you1) Publish cases with numbers you may show. 2) Keep company facts identical everywhere. 3) Read Bing’s grounding queries monthly.AI search visibility, once the SEO basics hold
Multilingual siteEach language edition, in its own market1) Correct hreflang and canonicals so every edition is indexed. 2) Copy written for each market, not translated. 3) Check each market’s engine — Yandex Webmaster for Russian-speaking buyers.Technical SEO audit

A rule of thumb: if Search Console shows more pages not indexed than indexed, nothing sold as AEO or GEO is your first problem.

How much should each step cost: DIY, a snapshot or an audit?

Spend in proportion to what you don’t know. If you know what is broken, pay for the fix; if you don’t, pay for the smallest diagnosis that will tell you.

AI-assisted means AI drafts and a person directs and checks; human-led means a specialist does the work and AI assists. In a crowded local market choose human-led: reading competitors is where a person’s judgement counts most.

What can you check yourself in 30 minutes?

You need Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and your Business Profile. Nothing here costs money.

  1. Search Console Performance — 5 minutesSort three months of queries by impressions and note the top ten. Many impressions and almost no clicks mark an AEO candidate: the answer may already sit on the results page. Check whose.
  2. Pages report — 5 minutesCompare indexed with not indexed pages and read the main reason.
  3. Generative AI report — 5 minutesImpressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date; no query tab. Google had opened it to every site by 31 August 2026, so an empty report usually means too few impressions. Confirm Settings → Search generative AI includes your site.
  4. Bing AI Performance — 5 minutesShows citations in Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries, plus a sample of grounding queries: the phrases the AI used to find your pages.
  5. robots.txt — 2 minutesOAI-SearchBot must not be disallowed. Blocking GPTBot is a training choice, not a search one.
  6. Ten prompts — 5 minutesAsk ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and AI Mode what customers ask: “Which [service] in [city] would you recommend?”, “How much does [service] cost in [city]?”. Log who is named and linked.
  7. Business Profile — 3 minutesMatch hours, services, phone and address against the website. A mismatch is the cheapest fix on this list.

What do real Search Console numbers look like?

Our own site, viton13.com (INTERNAL), is the warning case. On 21 August 2026 Google counted 738 pages indexed and 2,572 not indexed; the 28 days from 30 July to 26 August brought 69 clicks from 17,373 impressions. The first job was plain technical SEO — 1,008 retired URLs now answer 410 Gone and 141 permanent redirect rules sit in one map — because a page outside the index cannot be a source for any AI answer.

The opposite case, a client site built with indexing in mind from day one, is SB Excursions in the example below.

Which AEO and GEO offers should a small business turn down?

  • Citations promised by a date. No engine offers a way to book an organic citation.
  • llms.txt as the fix. Google says its Search, AI features included, does not use it.
  • “AI-ready” rewrites or chunking of every page. Google says neither is needed.
  • Manufactured mentions: paid forum posts, fake reviews, link-farm “citations”. Google says chasing inauthentic mentions is less helpful than it looks, and its AI features sit on the same systems that filter spam.
  • Pages written for every fan-out query. Google calls that scaled content abuse.
  • A schema package sold as AI ranking. Google says its AI features need no special markup.
  • A monthly “AI visibility score” with no baseline. If it does not name the prompts, engines and dates, you cannot check it.

Worth paying for: fixing indexing, pages built on first-hand facts and a baseline you can re-run yourself.

When is a Search Snapshot worth paying for, and when is it not?

Skip it if the self-check already answered the question: with most pages unindexed, go to a technical SEO audit; with rankings but no enquiries, fix the offer through Audit & Positioning. Buy the snapshot when the free reports contradict what customers tell you, or when you cannot name the three competitors who appear instead of you. You get one page to act on, not a plan you must buy next.

How VITON13 does it

The Search Snapshot is a one-page read of where you are visible now and what the cheapest next move is. We check your top queries, set three competitors side by side and write the findings on one page in 1–2 working days. It suits an owner who wants a straight answer before paying for SEO, AEO or GEO work.

SB Excursions: a five-language Bali tours site (a website build, not a Search Snapshot)

We designed and built the site: 28 tours in five languages, hreflang, canonical URLs, JSON-LD, titles that answer the practical question and a robots.txt that lets GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot read the pages. In the owner’s Search Console report for the three months to 17 September 2026 it had 1.08K clicks and 92.2K impressions, a 1.2% average click-through rate and an average position of 10.8. Daily clicks went from about 2.7 before 7 August to about 26 after it.

What this does not prove

  • Which change caused the rise on 7 August: indexing of the new language editions and the travel season may both have played a part.
  • Bookings or revenue: Search Console counts visits from Google, and enquiries continue in WhatsApp.
  • Anything about AI citations: the case has no data from AI answers.
  • Strong rankings: an average position of 10.8 means many queries still sit on page two.

Questions and answers

Will GEO replace SEO?

Not while AI answers are built from search indexes. Google’s AI features retrieve pages from its index, and Yandex’s Alice AI report covers only queries where your site already appears in results. What changes is reporting: answers send fewer clicks, so track impressions and citations next to clicks.

Is AEO just featured snippets?

It began there: winning featured snippets and voice answers. The same habits — the question as a heading, the answer first, a table for comparisons — make a page easy to quote in AI Overviews and chat answers too. So AEO is a way of writing inside SEO, not a separate service.

Do I need schema markup for AI search?

Not for Google’s AI features: Google says no special schema is required. Keep the markup that makes you eligible for rich results, such as Product markup on a store. Yandex differs for shops: it asks them to send product feeds to Yandex Products and mark up product pages so offers can appear in Alice AI answers.

How long until AI answers cite my business?

Nobody can give you a date. Technical changes travel fast — OpenAI says a robots.txt change reaches ChatGPT search in about 24 hours — but being chosen as a source depends on the page and the competition. Re-run the same ten prompts monthly and compare.

Can I do this without an agency?

Yes, for most small sites: the self-check uses free tools, and Google notes that plenty of content does well without overt SEO. Pay for judgement you lack — which competitors matter, why pages are not indexed — and buy a diagnosis before any monthly work.

Should I block AI crawlers?

Training and answers are separate switches. GPTBot and Google-Extended govern model training; OAI-SearchBot and Google’s Search generative AI setting decide whether you can appear in ChatGPT search, AI Overviews and AI Mode. To be recommended, you can refuse training and still leave the search switches open.
