How much does it cost to start selling on Wildberries or Ozon in 2026?

A Wildberries seller account costs 5,000 ₽ (about $59) and Ozon is free, but entry is the smallest line. The money goes into four pots: platform deductions (43.5–52% of a kids' jumper's price by the tariff tables), stock with marking and certificates, listings and photos, and 60–90 days of working capital. Excluding stock, a start costs 5,000–63,000 ₽ or more.

What goes into the cost of launching on a Russian marketplace?

Most online budgets are a single number: the seller blog Merkatus put the minimum Wildberries start at 80,000 ₽ in May 2025, for one product with no outside help. You cannot check or trim a single figure, so we split the budget into four pots.

  • Platform: entry, sales fee, logistics, storage; mostly deducted after the sale.
  • Stock and compliance: the batch, Chestny Znak codes, a declaration or certificate, optionally a trademark; paid before the first sale.
  • Launch work: listings, photos, niche research; one-off costs.
  • Working capital: the next batch, ads and taxes before the platform pays out.

How much do Wildberries, Ozon and Yandex Market take in 2026?

Take one product, the kids' jumper from our concept, and see what each platform deducts. Rubles convert at the Bank of Russia rate for 23 Sep 2026: 84.0657 ₽ per US dollar.

The table rate is not the bill: Wildberries subtracts the discounts it funds and a seller-level discount, and Ozon and Yandex Market take points against fees. The seller calculator shows the exact figure. Plan on the table rate; if the numbers work without discounts, you have headroom.

What do marking, certificates and a trademark cost?

Kids' clothing needs marking and proof of conformity. Jumpers and sweaters (customs code 6110) have needed Chestny Znak codes since 1 April 2024; safety rules come from the EAEU regulation TR CU 007/2011.

On 1 October 2026 Russia's platform economy law, No. 289-FZ, takes effect. Per Garant's summary of 18 Sep 2026, platforms must block listings of marked goods without marking details, and of certified goods without a link to the registry record, so documents move to “before the first listing”.

How do you work out break-even and the ad ceiling for one product?

Minimum price = (unit cost + logistics + marking code + ad spend per sale) ÷ (1 − platform rate − tax rate), with rates as decimals: 43.5% is 0.435.

A teaching concept, not client work. Returns, storage, acceptance and packing are left out; each lowers what is left.

Before ads the jumper breaks even at 797.85 ÷ 0.505 ≈ 1,580 ₽. The 207 ₽ left is the ad ceiling per sale, about 10.4% of the price; above it every order loses money. Our unit economics service runs this for every SKU, returns included, for $53 AI-assisted or $73 human-led.

  • Set the ad budget from this ceiling, not from a percentage someone calls normal.
  • On Wildberries the entry fee funds the first test: 5,000 ₽ of ad credit, valid for a year.
  • Track ad cost as a share of the item's revenue; if it stays above the ceiling, fix the listing or the price, not the bid.

How does Russia's VAT on the simplified tax change the numbers in 2026?

Per the Federal Tax Service, a seller on Russia's simplified tax (USN) is VAT-exempt in 2026 while income for 2025 and for 2026 so far stays within 20 million rubles (15 million for 2027, 10 million for 2028). Above that, the choice is a special 5% or 7% rate, set by income, without input-VAT deductions, or 22% with them.

In the concept, 5% VAT inside the price is 1,990 × 5/105 ≈ 94.76 ₽. What is left drops from 207.10 ₽ to 112.34 ₽, the ad ceiling to 5.6% of the price, and break-even rises to about 1,744 ₽. We still apply the 6% tax to the full price, which errs on the safe side.

  • Estimate the month your income passes 20 million rubles for 2026, or 15 million for 2027.
  • Price the tax in early, not on a live listing.
  • Whether 5% or 22% suits you depends on the input VAT in your purchases; decide with an accountant.
  • The tax lines assume a Russian sole trader; a foreign company needs its adviser's figures.

How VITON13 does it

We plan marketplace launches for small businesses with a product but no plan: which items go first and what must be ready before publishing. Scope, timeline and price are agreed in writing first. Registration, moderation and seller approval are the platform's decision alone.

Example

CONCEPTConcept — not a commissioned project

Concept: the kids' jumper from our Wildberries guide, and where break-even sits

A teaching example, not client work: 500 own-sewn jumpers for heights 92–128 cm from our Wildberries guide, sold by a Russian sole trader via FBW. Price and sewing cost are assumed; rates are official. Result: break-even near 1,580 ₽ before ads, 207 ₽ per sale left for ads, 112 ₽ with 5% VAT.

What this does not prove

  • This is not a client case: the studio has no published case of a launch on Wildberries, Ozon or Yandex Market yet.
  • The 1,990 ₽ price and 700 ₽ unit cost are assumptions, not market data.
  • The maths leaves out returns, storage and demand, and says nothing about sales or profit.

Questions and answers

Can you start selling on a marketplace with no money at all?

No. Ozon accounts are free, but stock, marking codes and documents are paid before the first sale, and Wildberries charges 5,000 ₽ to join. The cheapest start is a self-employed maker with an unmarked, own-made product and self-made listings, who pays only the Wildberries fee, or nothing on Ozon.

Which platform should you start on with a small budget?

Compare how fast cash comes back, not only the rates. Ozon is free to join, but on the standard schedule a week's revenue arrives three weeks later; faster payouts cost 1.29–4.99%. Wildberries' 5,000 ₽ entry fee comes back as ad credit. Yandex Market pays daily or weekly. Start where your category costs less.

Can a Russian self-employed seller sell kids' clothing?

No. The professional income tax law bars the regime for goods under mandatory marking, and jumpers and sweaters, kids' sizes included, are marked. The self-employed also cannot resell goods or earn over 2.4 million rubles a year. For kids' clothing you need a sole trader registration (IP) or a company.

Can a company based outside Russia sell on Wildberries?

Yes, if it is a legal entity registered in a WB Partners country, chosen at sign-up; the fee follows the country, such as 2 Belarusian roubles from Belarus. Individuals and Russian branches of foreign companies cannot register. Goods made outside the EAEU need a customs declaration number, or orders from buyers outside the Union stop at customs.

When will a marketplace launch pay back?

Nobody can say in advance, and we do not promise one: it depends on demand, buyout rate, competitors and price. Before ordering stock, check that one sale works at the table rate and that you hold cash for 60–90 days. After launch, compare actual ad cost per order with your ceiling every week.
