How much does an online store cost in 2026: Shopify theme, custom build or headless?
An online store costs about $3,000–$6,000 on a Shopify theme and $30,000–$250,000 as a custom build, according to Cleveroad; headless Shopify builds start near $50,000, per Roboto Studio. VITON13 builds a custom store from $113 AI-assisted or $173 human-led. Platform, app and card fees are paid on top, every month.

What does each route cost: a Shopify theme, a custom build or headless?
Three different builds hide behind the words “online store”. A theme store rents Shopify's checkout, hosting and admin and dresses them in your brand. A custom store is software written around your catalogue and rules. Headless keeps a commerce engine such as Shopify for products and payments and puts a separately built front end on top. The ranges below are published by firms that sell these builds: read them as quotes, not audited averages.
| Route | Build cost | Monthly running cost | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify theme, set up by an agency | $3,000–$6,000 | Shopify plan $39–$399, plus apps | Cleveroad; Roboto Studio |
| WooCommerce on WordPress | From $8,000 | Hosting $25–$350; extensions $29–$299 a year each | Cleveroad; WooCommerce |
| Shopify with a custom theme | $20,000–$130,000 | Plan, apps, agency retainer | Roboto Studio |
| Custom build | $30,000–$250,000 | Hosting and maintenance | Cleveroad |
| Headless: Hydrogen, or Next.js with a CMS | $50,000–$300,000 | Plan, hosting $20–$100, CMS $0–$45, retainer | Roboto Studio |
| VITON13 Shopify store | $73 AI-assisted or $93 human-led | Your Shopify plan and apps | VITON13 service page |
| VITON13 custom store | $113 AI-assisted or $173 human-led | Your hosting, domain and payment fees | VITON13 service page |
The spread is wide because the hours are: Cleveroad's own sample estimate adds up to 936 hours and about $90,000. A studio that publishes package prices has narrowed the scope before quoting, so compare the list of what is included, not the totals.
What does a store cost to run in its first year?
The build is paid once; the platform, the payment provider and the apps bill you every month the store is open. A cheap build on an expensive stack can overtake a dearer build within two years.
| Cost line | Typical figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify plan | $39–$399 a month; Plus about $2,300–$2,500 | Roboto Studio |
| Card payments (Stripe, US) | 2.9% + 30¢ per domestic charge; +1.5% for international cards | Stripe |
| WooCommerce | Free platform; hosting $25–$350 a month; WooPayments about 2.5–2.9% + 30¢ | WooCommerce |
| Apps on a theme store | $60–$200 a month | Roboto Studio |
| Headless hosting and CMS | Vercel $20–$100 and Sanity $0–$45 a month | Roboto Studio |
| Maintenance of a custom build | $500–$12,000 a month in agency quotes | Cleveroad |
A worked example with invented sales: $10,000 a month taken by card at a $50 average order means 200 orders. Stripe keeps 2.9%, or $290, plus 30¢ per order: about $350 a month and $4,200 a year before the plan or a single app. Add content per product, support and launch marketing, and you have a first-year budget to hold every quote against.
Which lines push an ecommerce quote up?
- Product count and data quality: 100 clean rows import quickly; thousands with duplicates, stale stock and missing images are a project of their own.
- Variants and pricing rules: sizes and colours are standard; made-to-measure options, bundles, wholesale tiers and regional prices need custom logic.
- Integrations: a warehouse, an ERP, 1C, a CRM or marketplace stock sync each needs data mapping, error handling and tests.
- Payments and delivery: one provider and flat shipping are simple; deposits, pickup points and live carrier rates are not.
- Languages and currencies: each adds product data, prices and category pages to maintain.
- Content and migration: product photos and descriptions are usually excluded, and leaving another platform means moving customers and orders and redirecting every old URL.
Data quality is the line buyers underestimate. When VITON13 assembled the Russia edit of its own marketplace, 8,202 source rows became 5,628 products after 2,493 stale and 81 rejected rows were dropped: almost a third of the file did not survive cleaning.
When is headless worth the extra money?
Headless separates the shop window from the till. You gain control of the front end and its speed: Roboto Studio reports cached Next.js pages served in under 50 ms against 300–800 ms for Liquid themes. You also take on a second codebase, its hosting and the people who maintain it. Roboto Studio, which sells headless builds, reserves it for heavy interactivity, content as important as the catalogue, complex custom filtering and regulated catalogues, and advises against it for a few hundred products on a decent theme.
A quick test: divide the extra first-year cost by a year of gross profit from online sales. Roboto Studio's models put headless about $138,000–$218,000 above a stock store in year one. Assume, purely for illustration, $1,000,000 of online sales at a 40% margin: $138,000 ÷ $400,000 means sales must grow about 35% just to break even.
Speed does move sales. In a Deloitte study for Google covering 37 brand sites and over 30 million sessions, a 0.1-second gain in mobile speed came with 8.4% more retail conversions. That is an average across sites, not a forecast for yours, and a lean theme with fewer apps wins much of that speed without a rebuild. Below a million dollars a year online, tune the theme first.
Shopify or a custom store: how do you choose?
- Does a standard checkout fit? If buyers pick a product and a variant and pay, Shopify's checkout is hard to beat on cost.
- Are your prices or options unusual? Configurators, deposits, B2B price lists and regional stock are where themes start to fight back.
- Which systems must the store talk to? One marketplace feed is an app; a two-way sync with 1C or an ERP is custom work on any platform.
- Who runs it day to day? A team without a developer needs an admin it can use alone; Shopify has one ready, a custom build must be designed for it.
- What would leaving cost? Plans and app fees are rent; a custom store costs more upfront, but its code and data move with you.
WooCommerce sits in between: no platform fee and full access to the code, but you run hosting, updates and security yourself. And if you have no audience yet, a marketplace may sell before a store of your own can; our marketplace launch guide prices that route.
Which red flags in an ecommerce quote cost you later?
- No product count or template list: the scope, and the invoice, can grow in any direction.
- No test orders: launch should include a successful payment, a failed one and a cancellation.
- Apps chosen by the builder with no monthly total: each is a subscription you inherit.
- Checkout changes promised on a standard Shopify plan: customising checkout needs Plus.
- Accounts in the agency's name: domain, platform, payments and analytics should be yours from day one.
- A migration with no redirect map: old product URLs that return 404 lose their traffic and links.
What does VITON13 charge for a store, and what sits outside the price?
Every store comes in two modes. AI-assisted: AI drafts templates and import scripts, and a developer directs, checks and signs off. Human-led: a specialist builds by hand and AI helps. For a custom store that is $113 against $173 for the same scope.
| Scope | Price | Window | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify development | $73 AI-assisted or $93 human-led | 5–8 working days | Up to 10 collections, 5 templates, 50 products by CSV, 3 apps, launch checklist |
| Ecommerce development | $113 AI-assisted or $173 human-led | 10–18 working days | Custom store: 6 templates, 100 products, 1 payment provider, order alerts |
| Ecommerce website design | $113 AI-assisted or $173 human-led | 6–10 working days | The store's page designs before the build |
| Payment system integration | $73 AI-assisted or $93 human-led | 5–8 working days | A further provider, with refunds tested |
| API and system integration | $73 AI-assisted or $93 human-led | 5–8 working days | A link to an ERP, 1C, a CRM or a warehouse |
| Ecommerce SEO | $53 AI-assisted or $73 human-led | 3–5 working days | Up to 20 categories matched to searches, filter and stock rules |
Outside every price: product photos and descriptions, platform, hosting and payment fees, and a second language or currency. Moving an existing store is website migration, from $53 AI-assisted or $73 human-led. Send your product count, a sample of the product spreadsheet and the systems to connect; the written estimate comes back the next working day.
How VITON13 builds your store
We build on Shopify when the catalogue fits a theme, and a custom store when prices, options or delivery rules do not. In AI-assisted production AI drafts and a developer checks every template; in human-led production a specialist builds and AI assists. Product count, templates, integrations and exclusions are agreed in writing first.

VIT MARKET: our own marketplace and its 5,628-product catalogue
VIT MARKET is VITON13's own marketplace at market.viton13.com, live in five languages. Its Russia edit shows 5,628 products in 10 categories over 157 pages, built from 8,202 source rows. Supplier APIs sit behind one provider layer with three adapters, so a supplier with missing credentials degrades instead of breaking pages. Checkout records each order as a request, and payment is agreed by hand.
What this does not prove
- There is no online payment and no sales data: it shows catalogue and data work, not conversion or revenue.
- It is our own project, not a client budget, and far beyond the starting package.
- The supplier catalogues are paused: CJ reported API access disabled at the 19 September 2026 release.
- Russia edit cards still carry SKU-style titles and provisional prices.

Questions and answers
How long does it take to launch an online store?
VITON13 publishes 5–8 working days for a Shopify store and 10–18 working days for a custom one, counted from the day the product file, delivery rules and payment account are ready. The usual delays are product data arriving late and payment accounts still awaiting approval.
Can I start on Shopify and move to a custom store later?
Yes, and it is often the sensible order: prove demand on a theme, rebuild when your rules outgrow it. Keep the domain, analytics and payment accounts in your company's name, and expect the move to cover products, customers, order history and a redirect for every old URL.
Who owns the store, the code and the product data?
You do. A custom store is handed over with its code, product data and admin access. A Shopify store runs on your own Shopify account, so theme changes and imported products stay with you. Payment, domain and analytics accounts belong in your company's name, never the builder's.
What if the AI-assisted build gets something wrong?
A developer reviews every template and import script AI drafts, and nothing goes live until test orders pass: a successful payment, a failed one and a cancellation. You check the store during two revision rounds, and the written scope decides what is a defect and what is a new request.
Do I need Shopify Plus?
Probably not at launch. Plus costs about $2,300–$2,500 a month in Roboto Studio's figures, and you need it to customise checkout, not to go headless: a headless storefront can use a standard plan if buyers finish in Shopify's normal checkout. Upgrade when a feature you need is Plus-only.
Can the price change after the estimate?
Price and scope are fixed in writing before production starts, and the price moves only if the scope does: more products, another integration, a second language or currency. Each is quoted as its own line, and you decide whether to add it now or after launch.
