How much does packaging design cost, and does it help sell?
Packaging design costs from $20–$100 an hour with freelancers on Upwork, $449–$1,699 for a 99designs contest, and far more at branding agencies, where the number of products drives the price. It matters: Ipsos found 72% of Americans say packaging design often influences what they buy. VITON13 designs packaging from $93.
How much does packaging design cost?
The price depends mostly on who designs and how much there is to design. A label for one product is a small job; a range of twenty products, each with its own flavour, size and legal text, is a system. Published rates show how wide the market is.
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer on Upwork | $20–$100 an hour, median $25–$45 | One designer; scope and quality vary widely |
| 99designs contest | $449–$1,699 | 30 to 50 concepts from many designers, one winner |
| One designer through 99designs | $349–$1,499 estimated | A direct project with a chosen designer |
| Branding agency | Often thousands of dollars per product line | Strategy, several concepts, a range system and print supervision |
| VITON13 | From $93 | Shelf direction, label hierarchy and print-ready artwork |
Does packaging design really affect sales?
In an Ipsos poll for the Paper and Packaging Board, 72% of American adults said the design of a product’s packaging often influences their purchase decisions, and 67% said the same about the materials; for gifts the figure rose to 81%. McKinsey’s 2020 research found that 60 to 70 percent of US consumers would pay more for sustainable packaging, although hygiene and product protection still mattered more to most.
For online sellers the effect continues after delivery. In a Dotcom Distribution survey of online shoppers, 40% said premium packaging makes them more likely to buy again and 50% that it makes them more likely to recommend the shop. Packaging is the one part of the brand every customer holds in their hands.
What drives the price of packaging design?
- Number of products: every SKU needs its own version, text and checks.
- Number of concepts: three directions cost more than one refined idea.
- Structure: changing the shape of the box, bottle or pouch is a separate, larger job than graphics.
- Illustration and photography: custom artwork or a product shoot adds time.
- Printing: special inks, foil, embossing and die-cuts need extra preparation and proofs.
- Mandatory information: ingredients, warnings, barcodes and marking codes in the right place and size.
- Languages: each extra market means new text and a new layout check.
What must packaging include for Wildberries and Ozon?
| Rule | Wildberries | Ozon |
|---|---|---|
| Barcode | On the product or its individual package and in the product card; Code-128 recommended | EAN-8, EAN-13, EAN-14, ISBN, UPC-12 or Code 39 |
| Mismatch | The barcode must match the product card | If the barcode differs from the account, the warehouse refuses the goods |
| Marking | Some goods need a Chestny Znak code; selling them without it is illegal | The same national marking rules apply |
| Transport packaging | Must protect the item in delivery | Intact and dry; boxes and barcodes of other marketplaces are not allowed |
Plan space for these elements from the first sketch. A barcode squeezed onto a curved edge, or a marking code printed over a fold, is a common reason for delays that no redesign of the front can fix.
How is packaging designed?
- Brief and shelf audit: who buys, where the product stands and what the competitors look like.
- Concepts: two or three directions tested at real size and as a small online thumbnail.
- Direction: one concept chosen and refined across the range.
- Label hierarchy: what the buyer reads first, second and third.
- Dieline and structure: the flat layout of the pack with folds, glue areas and safe zones.
- Mock-ups and proofs: 3D previews and a printed test before the full run.
- Print-ready artwork: files prepared to the printer’s specifications.

The packaging package covers the shelf direction, the label hierarchy and print-ready artwork. It takes 5–9 working days.
How do you design packaging that sells online too?
- Check every concept as a thumbnail the size of a search result on a phone.
- Make the product name and type readable at that size; move the rest to the back.
- Use strong contrast between the pack and a white or light background.
- Keep one main claim on the front instead of five small badges.
- Photograph the real printed pack for the product card, not only the 3D mock-up.
When is new packaging not worth it?
If the product itself is still changing, test it in a simple labelled pack first; a full design is wasted if the recipe, size or price moves next month. The same applies when sales are held back by price, reviews or availability rather than by how the pack looks. Fix what buyers complain about, then invest in the design that makes them notice you.
How VITON13 does it
We start with the shelf, physical or online: who buys, what stands next to your product and what must be read first. We set the direction, build the label hierarchy for the range, place barcodes, marking and legal text where they work, and prepare print-ready artwork to your printer’s specifications. AI-assisted: AI drafts concepts and mock-ups, a designer checks every file. Human-led: a designer leads, AI assists. The written scope and price arrive within one working day.

PILOTPilot in progress
No published packaging case yet
VITON13 has not yet published a packaging design case with a client’s product and figures, so this guide shows no invented sales results. The first brands join through the pilot programme, and their packs will be shown with their consent.
What this does not prove
- Without a case, nothing here proves how our packaging performs; the data comes from Ipsos, McKinsey, 99designs, Upwork and the marketplaces.
Questions and answers
How much does it cost to design a label for one product?
A single label is the smallest packaging job. Freelancers on Upwork charge $20–$100 an hour, 99designs contests start at $449, and VITON13 packaging design starts from $93. A range of products costs more because every version needs its own text and checks.
How long does packaging design take?
With VITON13 it takes 5–9 working days after the brief and the product data are approved. Printing adds its own time: proofs, a test print and the production run are scheduled with the printer.
Do I need a logo before packaging?
It helps. The logo and brand colours are the first things a buyer recognises on the shelf. If you have none yet, we can design a logo first or build the brand identity together with the range.
Can you prepare packaging for Wildberries and Ozon?
Yes. We plan space for barcodes and marking codes, follow the marketplaces’ labelling rules and check how the front reads as a small online thumbnail. The product card and photos can be made from the same files.
Will you work with my printer?
Yes. We prepare the artwork to your printer’s specifications, including bleed, colour profile and dieline, and answer their questions. The printing itself, materials and proofs are paid to the printer.
Is sustainable packaging worth the extra cost?
McKinsey found that 60 to 70 percent of US consumers would pay more for it, but protection and hygiene still come first for most. Choose materials that suit the product and delivery, and say only what is true about them on the pack.
