Marketing, SEO and AI search
How do you get customers from Google Maps and Yandex Maps?
Maps show businesses by relevance, distance and popularity, and you cannot pay Google for a better unpaid ranking. A complete profile with the right category, fresh reviews and accurate hours is what moves you up. BrightLocal finds 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. VITON13 local SEO setup starts from $53.
How do maps decide which businesses to show?
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and states plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, distance is how far you are from the searcher, and popularity comes from reviews, ratings and how well known the business is online and offline.
Whitespark’s 2026 survey of local search experts puts the primary business category, the distance to the searcher and a physical address in the searched city among the strongest factors, along with being open at the time of the search. Yandex works differently in detail but on the same idea: its rating appears after three to five ratings and reviews, is recalculated every day, and is not a simple average of stars.
Why do reviews matter so much?
| Finding | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Read reviews for local businesses | 97% | BrightLocal 2026 |
| Look for reviews from the last three months | 74% | BrightLocal 2026 |
| Won’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews | 47% | BrightLocal 2026 |
| Only use businesses with four stars or more | 68% | BrightLocal 2026 |
| Use AI tools such as ChatGPT to find local businesses | 45%, up from 6% | BrightLocal 2026 |
Reviews do two jobs at once. They feed the popularity signal that ranks you, and they persuade the person who already sees you. A profile with a steady flow of recent, answered reviews beats one with a hundred old ones, because both the platforms and the readers look at freshness.
What is free on maps, and what costs money?
| Platform | Free | Paid |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Business Profile at no charge | Ads are a separate product; unpaid ranking cannot be bought |
| Yandex Maps | Listing through Yandex Business at no charge | Ad subscription from 3,000 ₽, priced individually; priority placement for at least 90 days |
| 2GIS | Company listing at no charge | Ad packages in Moscow from 18,000 ₽ a month |
Paid placement buys visibility, not trust. A promoted pin with three reviews and no photos still loses the click to an unpaid neighbour with fifty recent reviews. Build the free profile first, then test paid placement where your competitors already buy it.
How do you set up a profile that brings calls?
- Claim and verify the profile on each map your clients use.
- Choose the most precise primary category, then add the secondary ones that really apply.
- Use your real business name; stuffing keywords into it breaks Google’s guidelines.
- Keep the address, phone and hours identical on every map, your site and social profiles.
- Add real photos of the place, the team and the work, and update them every few months.
- Describe services and prices in the profile, in the words customers search.
- Link to a page of your site that matches the profile, with the same address and phone.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days.
How do you get more reviews honestly?
- Ask right after a good result, while the customer is still pleased.
- Make it easy: a short link or a QR code at the counter, on the receipt or in the thank-you message.
- Ask everyone, not only happy customers; filtering requests breaks platform rules.
- Never buy reviews or write them yourself; platforms remove them and can penalise the profile.
- Answer criticism calmly and specifically; future customers read the reply more than the complaint.

How do you measure what maps bring?
| Metric | Where to find it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Calls from the profile | Profile statistics on each map | Direct demand from local searches |
| Route requests | Profile statistics | People planning to visit |
| Website clicks | Profile statistics and tagged links in analytics | Interest that continues on your site |
| New reviews and average rating | Each platform | Whether the review habit works |
| Enquiries mentioning maps | Your CRM or a question at first contact | Real clients, not just views |
When will map optimisation not help?
Map profiles are for businesses that meet customers in person, at their own address or across a service area. A purely online business without a place to visit gains little and should not invent an address. And no profile can outrank a bad reputation for long: if reviews point to a real service problem, fix the service first.
How VITON13 does it
We check your profiles on the maps your clients use, fix categories, names, hours and contact details so they match everywhere, build location pages on your site that prove where you work, and set up a simple process for asking for and answering reviews. Every location claim must match a real address, team or delivery area. AI-assisted: AI audits profiles and drafts texts, a specialist checks each change. Human-led: a specialist leads, AI assists. The written scope and price arrive within one working day.

No published local SEO case yet
VITON13 has not yet published a local SEO case with a client’s figures, so this guide shows no invented calls or rankings. The first local businesses join through the pilot programme, and their results will be published with their consent.
What this does not prove
- Without a case, nothing here proves how our local work performs; the data comes from Google, BrightLocal, Whitespark, Yandex and 2GIS.
Questions and answers
Is it free to be on Google Maps?
Yes. Google lets businesses manage how they appear on Maps and Search at no charge, and states that you cannot pay for a better unpaid local ranking. Paid ads are a separate product with their own label.
How long does it take to rise on the map?
Profile fixes can show within weeks, but reviews and reputation build over months. Distance to the searcher never changes, so a business will always rank better near its address than across town. We do not promise positions; we fix what the platforms say matters.
How many reviews does a business need?
More than your nearest competitors, and recent ones. BrightLocal found 47% of consumers avoid businesses with fewer than 20 reviews, and 74% look for reviews from the last three months. On Yandex, a rating appears after three to five ratings and reviews.
Can I pay to be first on Yandex Maps or 2GIS?
You can buy advertising and priority placement, which appear as promoted results. Yandex’s ad subscription starts from 3,000 ₽ and is priced individually, and 2GIS packages in Moscow start from 18,000 ₽ a month. The unpaid rating still depends on reviews and profile quality.
Can a business without an office appear on maps?
Yes, if it serves customers in person across an area, such as a repair or cleaning service. It can show a service area and hide the home address. Inventing an address to appear in another city breaks platform rules and risks the profile.
Should I reply to negative reviews?
Always, calmly and specifically: thank the person, state what happened and what you changed, and move details to a private channel. Future customers judge you by the reply more than by the complaint.
