Logo vs brand identity: what you get and which files to ask for
A logo is one mark, delivered as vector files with colour, mono and inverted versions, a safe zone and a minimum size. A brand identity is the system around it: fixed colour values, a type scale, icons, layout rules and a guidelines document. Buy the logo first; add the identity when other people start producing your material.

What is the difference between a logo and a brand identity?
A logo answers one question: what is the mark? A brand identity answers the next: what does everything else look like when someone else makes it? That means exact colour values, typefaces with sizes, icons, a grid and written rules for each surface. The brand is a third thing: what customers think of you. No designer can hand that over in a folder.
The difference shows the first time someone else makes something for you. With only a logo, a printer, a web developer and a marketplace manager each pick their own blue and their own font, and you look like three companies. With an identity they open one document and get the same answers.
Which files come with a logo package?
Every file in a logo package has a job. When one is missing, someone later screenshots or redraws your mark.
| File | Format | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Master vector | SVG and PDF, plus the editable source (AI or EPS) | Print, signage, the next designer |
| Full-colour version | SVG, PDF, transparent PNG | Site header, presentations |
| One-colour version | SVG, PDF | Engraving, embossing, one-ink print |
| Inverted version | SVG, transparent PNG | Dark backgrounds and photos |
| Icon-only version | SVG, PNG | Social avatars, app icons |
| Favicon | PNG or ICO larger than 48 × 48 px, plus SVG | Browser tabs, search results |
| Usage sheet | One-page PDF | Safe zone, minimum size, colour values |
Favicons are easy to get wrong. An SVG favicon alone is not enough for Google Search: its guidelines (updated 28 August 2026) list BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM and TIFF, with no SVG, and recommend a square larger than 48 × 48 px.
What does a brand identity package add on top of the logo?
The two VITON13 packages, line by line. Ask any designer you are comparing to fill in the same rows before you pay.
| Deliverable | Logo Route | Brand identity |
|---|---|---|
| Vector masters; colour, mono and inverted versions; safe zone and minimum size | Yes | Yes, for every lockup |
| Lockups | Primary and one-colour | Full logo system with all versions |
| Tested on photos, dark and light | Yes | Yes, plus on the surfaces you list |
| Colour | The mark's colours | Palette as fixed values, not descriptions |
| Typography | Not included | Type scale and hierarchy |
| Icons | Not included | Icon set on one stroke weight |
| Layout and application rules | Not included | Included |
| Written rules | Short usage rules | Guidelines document for new suppliers |
| Rights | Assigned in the contract | Assigned in the contract |
| Revision rounds | 1 round | Fixed in the written scope |
Two lines matter most. Fixed colour values stop drift: “our blue” in words means one thing to a web developer and another to a printer. The application step tries the system on your real surfaces, so a palette that works on a phone is corrected for cotton or kraft paper during the project, not at the print shop.
Already own a good mark? Standalone brand guidelines cost $73 AI-assisted or $113 human-led over 5–8 working days.
Do you need a full identity yet, or is a logo enough?
A logo alone is enough while one person makes everything customers see on one main surface, such as an Instagram account or a shop sign. Move to an identity when any of these is true:
- Someone else now makes your material: a freelancer, printer, sign maker or marketplace manager.
- You are about to print something expensive to redo: packaging, signage, uniforms.
- You sell in three or more places and they already look like different shops.
- You are launching a product line that needs a family of labels.
- You are pitching investors or distributors, and the deck, site and samples must match.
If none applies, a logo with a one-page usage sheet is the right purchase for now.
What does each cost, and how long does it take?
| Route | Price | Time | What you get | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VITON13 Logo Route | $53 AI-assisted or $73 human-led | 1–2 working days | One drawn route, primary and one-colour lockups, vector sources, 1 revision round | VITON13 |
| VITON13 brand identity | $93 AI-assisted or $113 human-led | 6–10 working days | Logo system, palette, type scale, icons, application rules, guidelines | VITON13 |
| VITON13 guidelines for an existing logo | $73 AI-assisted or $113 human-led | 5–8 working days | Rules document built on your current mark | VITON13 |
| Freelance logo, US | $200–$800 | Not stated | Logo design by a freelancer | ManyPixels, 30 Aug 2026 |
| Full visual identity, US | $1,000–$3,000 | Several weeks | Logo variants, palette, typography, written guidelines; freelancer or agency | ManyPixels, 30 Aug 2026 |
Each VITON13 package runs in two modes: AI-assisted (AI drafts variants, a designer directs and signs off) or human-led (a designer draws, AI assists). The file list is the same; the final price moves with the number of surfaces, lockups and revision rounds.
Where does an identity get applied: website, social, packaging, signage?
| Surface | What it needs | What goes wrong without it |
|---|---|---|
| Website | SVG logo, favicon in PNG or ICO plus SVG, HEX values, web-licensed fonts | Blurry header, blank favicon, swapped font |
| Social profiles | Icon-only version that survives a circular crop, post templates | Wordmark cut off in the round avatar |
| Marketplaces | Transparent PNG logo, colours for infographics, card layout rules | Every product card looks different |
| Packaging and labels | Print colour values, a spot colour for one-ink print, mono version, barcode zone | Colour shifts between batches; no barcode space |
| Signage | Full-size vector, inverted version for lit or dark signs | Pixelated sign or a local redraw |
Packaging is the most expensive place to find a mistake, because a print run cannot be taken back. The mark must work in one ink, the palette needs print values, and the layout must leave room for what you do not design: barcode, ingredients, legal marks. In the US a single GS1 US GTIN, one barcode number, costs $30 with no annual renewal fee (GS1 US, read 23 Sep 2026). Dielines, SKU variants and print-ready artwork are packaging design, a separate job that starts at $93 at VITON13.
What can a small business postpone until later?
Postpone by surface, not by taste: each item earns its place on the day a specific supplier or channel asks for it.
| Item | Get it now if… | Safe to postpone until… |
|---|---|---|
| Full guidelines document | Several people already make your material | A second maker appears; a usage sheet covers you until then |
| Icon set | Your site or app uses icons in navigation | You build the site or app |
| Photography direction | You shoot products this quarter | The first planned shoot |
| Packaging system | You have a printer, a quantity and a print date | A product is ready to pack |
| Animated logo, sub-brands, merchandise | Video, a second line or uniforms start now | That channel or line is confirmed |
Who owns the files, and what should the contract say?
Paying for a logo does not make you the copyright owner. Under US law, work commissioned from an outside designer counts as “made for hire” only if it belongs to one of nine categories in the Copyright Act and both sides sign a written agreement saying so (Circular 30). A standalone logo usually fits none of them, so the designer keeps the copyright until a transfer is signed in writing (17 U.S.C. § 204(a)).
Copyright covers the drawing; a trademark protects a word or design that identifies your goods or services, and the USPTO notes a logo can be protected that way. A designer's similarity check is not trademark clearance.
The contract should state:
- The final mark and system are assigned to your company in full on payment, in writing and signed.
- The files handed over, by format, including editable sources.
- Rejected concepts stay with the designer and are not resold as variants of your mark.
- Which typefaces are used and who holds each licence. Google Fonts may be used commercially and in logos; paid fonts need a licence in your company's name.
- Any stock, AI-generated or third-party elements, listed.
- Portfolio rights, revision rounds and what counts as new scope.
Which files should you ask for at handoff?
Tick every line before the final payment, whoever the designer is.
- Vector masters of every lockup in full-colour, one-colour and inverted versions, as SVG and PDF, plus the editable source
- Transparent PNGs at the sizes you use now: site header, avatar, email signature
- Favicon in PNG or ICO larger than 48 × 48 px, and in SVG
- HEX and RGB for screen, CMYK for print, a spot colour if you print one ink
- Font names, weights used, files or links, proof of licence
- Heading and body sizes for phone and desktop (identity)
- Safe zone and minimum size as numbers
- Icon set in SVG and a guidelines PDF (identity), or a one-page usage sheet (logo)
- Examples applied to your real surfaces
- A signed rights transfer and an invoice that names the deliverables
Before approving, send the folder to your printer and web developer and ask what is missing; their questions are cheaper to answer now than after the designer moves on.
How VITON13 does it
The Logo Route suits a business that needs one usable mark this week. Brand identity is for when outside suppliers start making your material; it is built from the list of surfaces your brand appears on. Both run AI-assisted or human-led, with scope, revisions and price fixed in writing before work starts.

VITON13's own brands: five marks, one accent colour, rules kept in code
VITON13 built the identity of its own brands straight into the code of viton13.com, a site on seven hosts in five languages. The case records five marks, two drawn and three set in type, and one accent colour, sky blue #5ac8ff on black, used in 10 CSS modules. The SCHOOL mark exists as inline SVG, an SVG file and a 1600 × 1600 PNG; scripts render 90 social preview cards. There is no brand book: the rules live in components and style sheets. That suits a team that writes its own code, not a business whose printer needs a PDF.
What this does not prove
- It is internal work, not a client project; recognition and sales were not measured.
- With no guidelines document, it does not show a supplier-ready brand book.
- The colours are not uniform even here: the homepage moved to a light palette on 10 September 2026, and the SCHOOL page has its own.
- VITON13's own store labels Old Money, RISE and ANIRI have no logo files; the GELO bottle picture in the case is AI-generated, not a photograph.

Questions and answers
What is the difference between a logo usage sheet, brand guidelines and a brand book?
The terms overlap, so judge by contents. A usage sheet covers the mark alone: versions, safe zone, minimum size, colour values. Guidelines add rules for type, colour, icons and layouts on every surface. A brand book often adds the story, values and tone of voice. Ask for the table of contents before you pay.
Can a logo made with AI be protected?
In the US, the Copyright Office's January 2025 report says AI output is protected only where a human determined enough of the expressive elements; prompts alone do not qualify, but using AI as a tool does not bar protection. Trademark rights come from use and registration, whoever drew the mark.
Do I need Pantone colours?
Only if you print a spot ink: one-colour packaging, merchandise or long signage runs. Everyday print needs CMYK values, and screens need HEX and RGB. Get all three sets at handoff anyway, so no future printer matches your colour from a screenshot.
My designer only sent PNG and JPG files. What now?
Ask for the vector master and editable source; they often exist but were never exported. If the designer is unreachable, the mark must be redrawn as vector, which is a new job, so check the redraw against the original at a large size before printing anything.
Should the logo be finished before the website is built?
At least the mark, colour values and typefaces should be. The site uses them in the header, favicon, social previews and style sheet, so changing them after launch means paying for the same pages twice; icons and illustrations can follow later.
